Ancient Ionia (Greece) Map Donation

Framed map of Ionia (now Turkey) and the Ionian Islands donated to library by Stephen McGrane in memory of his father

We have an interesting artifact on display at the library.  We have been given a beautifully framed map of another  Ionia.  This one was off the coast of Greece and is now known as Turkey. The map also shows the Ionian Islands off the west coast of Greece.  This map was done in 1844 by S. Agustus Mitchell and  is hand colored.  The image came from Mitchell's Ancient Atlas, which included other classical and sacred maps.

The donor of the map, Stephen McGrane wrote a narrative about the regions in the map.  One section of the narrative states:

"The world is in debt to Ionia (Greece) for giving birth to a long roll of distinguished men of letters and science and for originating the distinct school of art which prepared the way for the brilliant artistic development of Athens in the 5th century B.C.  Ionia was also the birthplace of philosophy and where coins were first introduced.  Ionians are also credited as being of critical importance  to the development of the scientific study of nature.  The Ionian alphabet was adopted as the official alphabet in Athens in 403 B.C. Homer was also a native of Ionia and wrote his epics in the Ionian dialect.  The Ionic style of architecture, with its tall, slender columns and fluted shafts, spread to Greece and the southern Mediterranean and even Persia.  "The document goes on with more information to read more.

Please come to the library and see this very thoughtful gift given by Stephen and his family in memory of his father Earl McGrane, Ionia, Iowa, postmaster 1964-1978.  Earl passed away Sept 24, 1989.
